Planning for pregnancy if you have diabetes

If you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and are sexually active it is important to think about contraception and pregnancy. For women with diabetes who do not plan their pregnancy, the risk of a serious pregnancy complication (e.g. stillbirth, serious heart or birth defect) is about 1 in 10.

If you plan your pregnancy with your diabetes team, your risk of serious complications falls closer to that of women without diabetes (1 in 50). Try and see your GP, practice nurse, or a specialist diabetes team as soon as you start thinking about having a baby. The earlier the better, and even 6-12 months before stopping contraception is a great time to start the discussion.

We have published a new leaflet outlining what to consider if you have diabetes and could become pregnant. It covers:

  • What to think about before getting pregnant
  • How to reduce the risk of pregnancy complications
  • What to do if you find out you are pregnant
  • Useful resources and local links
